Hello game developers!
Welcome to another episode of JustForward podcast. My name is Timur, I’m the host of this podcast and CEO of JustForward Game Development Studio. In this episode I would like to provide some thoughts regarding indie game development strategy. This will be interesting for those who just started first steps in game development and for those who are going to start their indiedev journey.
I know many newcomers who passionate about game development. They really keen on gaming and want to make their own games. Usually, those people spend much time on playing big well established game titles. And they have several ideas about their own games which are usually very big and require too much resources. It’s a kind of a dream game.
There are for sure pros and cons for that approach. The awesome thing that you can fully be involved into the development and implement the exact idea you want. This approach will help to keep passion when you make your game almost for the lifetime of a project, because when you are free in your thoughts you can implement everything you want, you know, it’s like to become a kid once again.
It’s reasonable to mention that there is a high risk that the game won’t be as successful as you plan. Just imagine, you start the big project, establish a development team of at least 3 members, spend money and about a year, then you set high expectations, because you’ve invested too much money and time. And then… it’s just not growing, it makes very decent revenue. Not good results, right? It’s vital to point out that there are many underwater rocks if you want to start making your big game. And let’s be frank, there is a high risk to be unseccusfull and give up in the middle. Yes, it’s not as perfect as it seemed at the very beginning.
Well, we’d like to share some thoughts with you on how can you be more successful and sustainable with your game development journey. Let’s forget for some time about long development of well-established game with many worlds, levels, narrative etc. Let’s simplify it as much as we can. Yes, we won’t develop what we wanted on the start and, perhaps, we won’t get as much fun and joy as we expected when entered game development. But we will start a sustainable business model, a strong way, that in a long term will lead to big project with a higher probability.
The easiest way to start is to make one-tap causal mobile games. This is a growing market today. People spend time in shops, traffic jams and etc and they need time killers, they play small easy games to relax and kill time. Time killer games are awesome and they can be made with gamedev tools like Buildbox or Game Maker very fast. For instance, the game Color Switch that took strong positions in top charts was made with Buildbox for about a week. And we can see how successful it is now. Casual one tap games is a great option to start fast and to make money from your early steps.
The approach we explain also means non-waste production. Even if you made a game and it didn’t succeed then you can put this game on sale to source code marketplaces. Nowadays it’s a good business, there are several game templates marketplaces on which you can earn money by selling your game source codes under the license. You put the game once on a marketplace and it can be sold many times. People who purchase a licensed game template then have to reskin it and able to submit it to stores then.
As a result there is a great opportunity to establish a development cycle in which you will definitely get return on investment in a short term. Get experience on small projects and grow constantly and one day you will have enough power to make the game of your dream.
